Doing good

Graham & Sue Hall were visiting us this weekend. Graham gave us 12 point on doing good according to Acts 11.

Outline morning service:

Acts 11:19-30

The Church in Antioch
19 Some of the Lord’s followers had been scattered because of the terrible trouble that started when Stephen was killed. They went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, but they told the message only to the Jews. 20 Some of the followers from Cyprus and Cyrene went to Antioch and started telling Gentiles the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s power was with them, and many people turned to the Lord and put their faith in him. 22 News of what was happening reached the church in Jerusalem. Then they sent Barnabas to Antioch.  23 When Barnabas got there and saw what God had been kind enough to do for them, he was very glad. So he begged them to remain faithful to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 Barnabas was a good man of great faith, and he was filled with the Holy Spirit. Many more people turned to the Lord. 25 Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul. 26 He found Saul and brought him to Antioch, where they met with the church for a whole year and taught many of its people. There in Antioch the Lord’s followers were first called Christians. 27 During this time some prophets from Jerusalem came to Antioch. 28 One of them was Agabus. Then with the help of the Spirit, he told that there would be a terrible famine everywhere in the world. And it happened when Claudius was Emperor. 29 The followers in Antioch decided to send whatever help they could to the followers in Judea. 30 So they had Barnabas and Saul take their gifts to the church leaders in Jerusalem.

I remember the moment  as a 20 year old on June 13th 1974 the Dutch made me really miserable.

I will attempt to describe the reason why  : totaalvoetbal

“Total Football” (Dutch: totaalvoetbal) is the label given to an influential tactical theory of football in which any outfield player can take over the role of any other player in a team. It was pioneered by Dutch football club Ajax from 1969 to 1973, and further used by the Netherlands National Football Team in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. It was invented by Rinus Michels, a famous Dutch football trainer/coach (who was the coach of both Ajax and the Netherlands national team at the time).

In Total Football, a player who moves out of his position is replaced by another from his team, thus retaining the team’s intended organisational structure. In this fluid system, no outfield player is fixed in a nominal role; anyone can be successively an attacker, a midfielder and a defender. The only player fixed in a nominal position is the goalkeeper.

This was a great strategy that when carried out accurately was demoralising

( depressing) to the opponents.

In Acts 11 we have just read The Holy Spirit’s Supernatural strategies  (architecture ) for “Total Church’.

The church in Antioch.

The first half of my time speaking to you, I want to draw out quickly 10 essential parts of this Supernatural architecture that shaped the Antioch church. In the second part I simply want to share a little about the Holy Spirit has applied this Antioch supernatural architecture through what is happening at our church in Ashford, Kent. My prayer is that this will bring a growing understanding and inspiration for you to break open new areas both in the city and the region beyond.

Bibles open at  Acts 11:19ff

1) It was comprised of Breakthrough Believers  –  Acts 11:19-20
They shared the gospel wherever they went ( through difficult times of persecution and trouble)

2. Evangelism was in the church members DNA            – Acts 11:20-21
Evangelism isn’t just for extroverts and Italians!! Our most dangerous and fruitful witnesses are the quiet ones – Christine – very quiet spoken and shy – but because she is filled with a love for. Jesus, she steps out beyond her fear and asks “Can I pray for you?’ Big guy with Tattoo “ Atheist and proud”.

3. There was apostolic input  from the leaders at Jerusalem which was well received.     – Acts 11:22
The church itself was teachable :Faithful/ Accountable/Servanthrarted/Teachable
(New church plants remain open and welcoming to apostolic ministry)

4. There was observable grace of God upon them (Acts 11:23)
Spiritual gifts/giving/fellowship/freedom, Forgiveness. Grace gives space…No “No-go” areas
‘We cannot be perfect but we can be authentic’. Its how you resolve people’s problems that determines if a true grace foundation is being laid.

5.Team ministry   –   Acts 11:25-26
( Not building to myself out of my insecurity or of needing constant affirmation )
God is Team Trinity – Satan is an individualist – who are you going to model your ministry on? “Pulling others in” ‘Come and see’ – this place will do you good…

6. Teaching              – Acts 11:26
Barnabas brought Paul into the team to teach the church : Bible based teaching is vital for church growth. We must ‘teach as we reach’. Jesus sent out his disciples and brought them back for more teaching. Teaching should be the fuel for mission. For a church to function well and grow healthily it cannot be sustained by shallow subjective talks. One of the best antidotes to addressing sexual immorality in a church is to teach good doctrine rightly applied.“ For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God” Acts 20:27

7.Benevolence (Giving)         – Acts 11:28-30
They gave to support poorer brothers and sisters. Do good to all – especially the household of God. Jesus told us to give outrageously to others ( not just those in church). Sue and lady at supermarket checkout – paid for her groceries (Sue)

8. Prophetic Ministry         –  Acts 11-27, 13:1
Prophets from Jerusalem came down-  Dont’ despise village mission. (Simon planting into Ottawa from a small village near Ashford. Jesus was from Nazereth)

9. Plurality of Leadership Acts13:1
Notice the leadership combination at Antioch. Black, white and  brown. different backgrounds and educational levels.

10. Ministering to the Lord           Acts 13:2
A spirit of worship in Antioch type churches. Fasting and prayer: It breaks through strongholds.

11. Prayer and Fasting and the ministry of the Word (Acts 13:3)
Antioch churches are houses of prayer

12. A sending church          Acts 13:3
They set Barnabas and Paul went out from them on missionary exploits. Every church should be a church planting church- if not, why not? It’s vital we understand the importance of having a strong GRACE BASE that develops these 12 essential keys for an Antioch model – Supernatural architecture for supernatural mission. (Total church). The second half! what being missional looks like for us at Ashford

GCA : ordinary people, extraordinary God

Prophesy about of shoal of fish

One ministry is profound : Her picture

Jenny Boardman Holmes

Operation on her leg went wrong – had a replacement knee , in constant pain

really in love with Jesus , always praising God, makes me feel ashamed when I am miserable with a cold. Jenny filled with the Holy Spirit, attends a government  pain management group. She makes friends the members, they have to find another place to meet. She asked if their group can meet in our Healing centre. She starts to organise speaker to come in from local agencies, including leaders of our counselling team, nutrition, Physiotherapy team, chiropractor team and then she invites in to this group of very disabled people the leaders of our healing rooms. They share the Gospel, people ask for prayer and  they become wide open to God’s love and things starts to to happen!

This ministry came out of decision to be like Jesus in how we reach out in missional love to others

Acts 10:38

The verse that shapes our missional work.

1)  “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him”.

God’s supernatural strategy: DO GOOD – Serve the lost. “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28 (Its the vehicle for the gospel) ‘Doing good’ in the Father’s anointing and Spirit’s power was the Holy Trinity’s divine strategy to reach us in our ‘lostness’.  (“ Peace be with you As the Father sent me so I send you..”) John 20:21
Simple really- where there was an opportunity to serve our community we would do it. Stewarding at the Burgermeester’s Festival. Decorating flats painting over graffiti (explicit biological diagrams!)

2) We really valued the prophetic words from the prophets
We recorded, reprinted them off, we read them, reread them prayed over them together and every new member is informed about the big words.

3) God gave us a project : Keith Hazell. Warehouse for 1 Euro a year
Furniture and baby equipment to collect donations then distribute for small fee or give it away if desperate to people, There was an environmental need to save good furniture from being thrown away and a human need. 2000 families helped in the last year, 5 now people employed with 10 volunteers, The first missional community was the Holy Trinity.

Mission flows out of togetherness

We now have a special building we rent in a shopping centre where we offer
Professional qualified physiotherapy, sports massage, counselling play therapy.

People in the church who choose to ‘gift’ one day of their week or Saturday mornings to offer their professional skills free of charge.

Its not natural because its supernatural.

Teachers offer to provide free and low cost tuition for people to learn how to speak English to a proper qualification level. The local authorities are amazed and people are loved. 11 nationalities currently attending.

We have 14 trained money management trainers who run courses for people to learn how to run finances. People come to church and then come to faith.

When we plant a church – we take the same principles and practices with to reach the community with God’s unconditional love.

At GCA God has graciously given us many open doors for reaching our community

When we first plant the church in Ashford 12 years ago

Prophecy about a shoal of small fish- no superstars

The biggest doors have swung open on the smallest hinges

We contend for advance together, we pray together, even though individuals might be

We love people together, we hurt together, we get breakthrough together

Finally, a church that prays

24/7 – Praying to learning how to pray

Formentera; Fig tree – branches supported through prayer ( Picture)

I and the father are one (John10:30)

Authentic NT mission flows out of unity, is sustained by unity and adds to unity

That’s why we talk about missional families

Its the Gospel of the Kingdom not just the Gospel
